Hi Jim; Before getting into the carb, check the two bolts where the exhaust pipe bolts to the head. If it is sucking air it will cause an unburned fuel/air mix in the pipe which will backfire. Mine was starting to backfire a lot and then when I did the head bolt maintenance I found the exhast pipe bolts to be loose, so after tightening them the backfire diminshed to almost nothing.
